The Obesity Documentary: Fed Up

Fed Up is a documentary that will be released on May 9 in US on the relationship between the food industry and childhood obesity. The film is directed by Stephanie Soechtig (Tapped) and is executive produced by Academy Award-winner Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth) and news anchor Katie Couric (who also pulls double duty as narrator).

Major influencers like Dr. Mark Hyman, food scold Michael Pollan, and former president Bill Clinton all make appearances in the trailer, which weaves startling statements and statics like "there are 600,000 food items in America, 80% of them have added sugar" and "over 95% of all Americans will be overweight or obese in two decades" between images of sugar-ladened junk food. USA Today writes that documentary is "the film the food industry doesn't want people to see.". The offical trailer can be seen below:

Awareness Week on Alcohol-Related Harm

A group of organisations came together to raise awareness among EU policy makers of alcohol-related harms by initiating the first European Awareness Week on Alcohol-Related Harm (AWARH’13), that was held from 13 to 17 May 2013. The AWARH’13 aimed to highlight the negative effects of alcohol and call for greater action to address the problems it can cause.

Throughout the Week, several events and actions were organised to encourage policy-makers and citizens to state their commitment to tackle alcohol-related harm and show support to address one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Europe.

The AMPHORA Manifesto: for effective alcohol policy in Europe

AMPHORA is a European research project, which started in 2009, funded by the European Commission. The AMPHORA scientists felt something had to be done about the problem of alcohol in Europe, because many of the deaths and problems related to alcohol are avoidable.
Because alcohol has often been linked to celebrations and social life in Europe, we frequently forget that it is an addictive drug like any other, and this complacency can make it even more dangerous. If we look at the statistics, we have to admit that Europe has a drinking problem.
Years of research into alcohol policy has pointed to ways that public policies can prevent some of these problems, and these policy messages have been gathered together in the AMPHORA Manifesto.
